Zermatt is an idyllic mountain village tucked away in the Swiss Alps. The mighty Matterhorn dominates the skyline, creating one of the most unique alpine landscapes in Europe. Explore the hiking trails, journey up higher into the mountains by cable car and train, stroll the scenic streets of Zermatt, and go skiing all year long. Here are the best things to do in Zermatt.
We love Zermatt and have been here multiple times. On our most recent visit, we visited Zermatt in July 2022. Between late July and early August, we hiked the Walker’s Haute Route, a 14 day trek that starts in Chamonix, France and ends in Zermatt, Switzerland. For those who like the idea of a multi-day hiking adventure, hiking up and over mountain passes, visiting hamlets and quaint towns, and seeing a less touristy side of Switzerland, the Haute Route is an experience to consider.

An Impressive View from the Panorama Ski Lodge | Top Activities in Zermatt
In the latter part of this feature, you will come across some excellent hotel suggestions. Our premier visit to Zermatt led us to the Panorama Ski Lodge, an experience we fondly remember. The awe-inspiring sight of the Matterhorn from our lodging remains unparalleled.
During our subsequent sojourn, we chose to lodge at the Matterhorn Lodge. Our accommodation offered a picturesque view of the Matterhorn and the Parish Church of St. Mauritius, the town's centerpoint. This hotel's central location in Zermatt ensures swift access to most of the town's attractions.
Enumerated below are our most loved viewpoints of the Matterhorn:
The path stretching from Gornergrat to Riffelberg
The vantage point from the Gornergrat railway
The route leading to Hornlihütte
Sunnegga Viewpoint
A charming eatery in Findeln
The position from Stellisee
Matterhorn Glacier Trail
These viewpoints exhibit some of the most magnificent views of the Matterhorn. Whether you're hiking along the path from Gornergrat to Riffelberg or dining at a local restaurant in Findeln, the visual spectacle is truly a sight to behold. Interestingly, the Matterhorn Glacier Trail and the Stellisee also provide unique, panoramic views of this beautiful mountain peak.
2. Sunnegga Viewpoint
From the Sunnegga Viewpoint, you get a great view of the Matterhorn.
View of the Matterhorn from Sunegga Viewpoint | Best Things to Do in Zermatt
This is easy to get to and a visit here can easily be combined with Rothorn and the walk to Stellisee. If you are looking for a high alpine view of the Matterhorn without investing a lot of time or money, this is your best option.
Getting Here: The Sunnegga funicular station sits next to the Vispa River. On Google Maps, it is called Sunnegga Blauherd Rothorn Funicular. Ride the funicular to the Sunnegga viewpoint (about 8 minutes). For more information on the route, read our Sunnegga – Blauherd – Rothorn Guide.
Cost: CHF 20 one way; CHF 28.50 return ticket; these prices are for the summer months (July 1 to August 31), prices are slightly cheaper the remainder of the year
3. Rothorn
The panoramic vista offered by Rothorn is truly awe-inspiring in Zermatt. The scenery resembles that of Sunnegga, albeit from a significantly higher altitude, enabling you to gaze across the majestic Alps.
A Glimpse from Rothorn | Highlights of Zermatt Exploration
Accessing Rothorn: Your adventure to this location comprises three parts. Board the funicular to start your journey towards Sunnegga. Transition from Sunnegga via the gondola that takes you to Blauherd. From Blauherd, catch the cable car that directs you towards Rothorn.
Fee: The fares are CHF 53 for a one-way journey and CHF 81.50 for a round trip during the summer (July 1 to August 31); costs are somewhat reduced for the rest of the year.
4. Embark on a Blauherd to Stellisee Excursion (and Miss the Five Lakes Trail)
As preparations for our Zermatt exploration were well underway, mentions of a revered path known as the Five Lakes Trail (5-Seenweg) caught our attention repeatedly.
This trail has earned its place as one of the most sought-after hikes in Zermatt. The allure of traversing around five glacial lakes coupled with constant panoramas of the Matterhorn made it sound irresistible.
Thus, we embarked on this adventure and subsequently questioned its celebrated status.
Our inauguration into the journey was promising. Ascending from Blauherd (the intermediary station enroute to Rothorn) towards Stellisee, we were greeted by the breathtaking sight of the Matterhorn reflected in the crystalline depths of the lake.
Stellisee and the Matterhorn | Best Things to Do in Zermatt
View along the Five Lakes Trail. On the opposite hillside, you can see the trail.
However, the rest of the walk was monotonous. We walked on boring, gravel roads and dirt trails through the woods and visited four more lakes. But after Stellisee, these lakes were a let-down. Honestly, once we got to third lake, we couldn’t wait for this hike to be over.
For more details on the hike, read our post The Five Lakes Trail (5-Seenweg)…Is it Worth It?
Our recommendation is to walk from Blauherd to Stellisee, turn around, and retrace your steps back to the Blauherd station. You’ll get the best views and it won’t take much of your time (3 km; 2 miles long and takes about an hour).
The Five Lakes Trail is 9.8 km (6.1 miles) long and takes 3 hours.
Getting Here: Ride the funicular to Sunnegga and the gondola to Blauherd. The hike starts at the Blauherd station.
PRO TRAVEL TIP: For the best Rothorn experience, I recommend visiting Sunnegga, the Rothorn summit, and the hike to Stellisee all on the same visit. Purchase return tickets to Rothorn (CHF 81.50 in the summer) and visit these three places in any order you like. A visit to all three will take roughly 3 hours.
5. Experience the Thrill of Mountain Carting
Looking for a quick burst of exhilaration? Why not try out mountain carting and embark on an adrenaline-fueled ride down the mountain slopes.
Riding a mountain cart from Blauherd to Sunnegga | Best Things to Do in Zermatt
A mountain cart is a three-wheeled cart, similar to a go-kart, but there is no motor and no pedals (there are hand brakes). Gravity pulls you down the mountain and all you have to do is steer it and enjoy the view.
We rented a mountain cart at the Blauherd station and rode it to Sunnegga. It’s tons of fun and the views are incredible.
You can rent a mountain cart for a one-way journey or spend an hour or two, riding the cart from Blauherd to Sunnegga and the gondola from Sunnegga to Blauherd, making loops up and down the mountain.
6. Embark On A Journey to Gornergrat and the Trail to Riffelberg
Our most cherished memory of Zermatt lies in the unforgettable journey to Gornergrat. Should your itinerary allow for just a single mountain-side adventure, with the prospect of grandiose views of the eminent Matterhorn, Gornergrat deserves a spot in your schedule.
This journey, from its commencing moment to its conclusion, is an absolutely breathtaking experience, one for the books indeed.
Beginning at the quaint town of Zermatt, you'll board the incredibly picturesque Gornergrat railway bound for Gornergrat. This journey unveils some magnificent vistas of the town that are a treat to the senses (the right side of the train offers the most exemplary views).

Once there, revel in the scenic beauty from the viewing platform, providing a 360° scenic view of the Alps. 15. Pay Your Respects at the Mountaineer’s Cemetery
The Mountaineer’s Cemetery is a solemn and significant area, home to the graves of brave individuals who tragically died while mountaineering in the Zermatt vicinity. Nestled behind the St. Mauritius Parish Church, this modest yet meaningful cemetery should not be mistaken with its larger counterpart by the banks of the Matter Vispa river.
Memorial of Courage
This intimate memorial serves as the final resting place for approximately 50 fearless climbers who met their fate on iconic Swiss peaks such as the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Täschhorn, Liskamm, Obergabelhorn, and Weisshorn, with one notable exception. Within these grounds, you will discover a commemorative gravestone dedicated to Peter and Peter Taugwalder, a valiant father and son tandem who guided Edward Whymper in his historic ascent of the Matterhorn, marking a significant milestone in mountaineering history.
A testament to the indomitable spirit of these brave adventurers, the Mountaineer's Cemetery stands as a solemn reminder of the perils faced in pursuit of conquering nature's stunning heights. Open at all times and with no admission fee, it offers an opportunity for reflection and a chance to pay tribute to the extraordinary individuals who dared to dream and scale these magnificent peaks.
16. Walk across the Hängebrücke
The Hängebrücke is a hanging suspension bridge located near the Furi cable car. From the bridge you get a nice view of the town of Zermatt.
Hangebrücke | Best Things to Do in Zermatt
To get here, hike the trail that starts next to the Furi gondola station. You can either walk out and back to the bridge on the same trail or continue across the bridge and hike down the other side.
NOTE: This bridge is not to be confused with the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge. The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge is 494 meters long and it is the longest suspension bridge in the Alps.
The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge Experience
This captivating site is actually found outside of Zermatt - in the neighboring town of Randa, to the north. Accessing Randa is possible either by train or self-drive if you're coming with a vehicle.
On arriving in Randa, trail #69 awaits your adventurous spirit. The hike is a challenging but compact 8.6 km (5.3 miles) endeavor, coupled with a vertical gain of 990 meters (3,300 feet). Mainly, your path carries you through the serenity of the woodlands, meaning extensive panoramic views, such as the Mattherhorn, are off the table. The offered distances also encompass a trip to the Europahutte.
During the Walker’s Haute Route hike, we managed to experience the thrill of crossing the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge. 17. Discover the beauty of the Gorner Gorge
Experience the remarkable Gorner Gorge, a natural wonder shaped by the flowing waters of the Gornervispa river. Delve into the depths of this mesmerizing chasm, immersing yourself in its captivating atmosphere through a series of well-constructed boardwalks and scenic hiking trails.
Gorner Gorge | Best Things to Do in Zermatt
It is located near the Forest Fun Park, between the Furi and Zermatt gondola stations.
We did this on our second visit to Zermatt. The gorge is pretty, but we were a bit underwhelmed. If you only have a few days in Zermatt, we recommend you spend your time exploring the mountains rather than visiting the Gorner Gorge.
PRO TRAVEL TIP: The best time to visit the gorge is in the afternoon in October, when the sunlight hits the gorge just right to light up the turquoise water.
How to Get to the Gorner Gorge: The entrance into the Gorner Gorge is just past the Forest Fun Park and soccer field. Look for a concrete bridge. On the lefthand side just past the bridge there will be a sign for Gornerschlucht. Follow the sign onto a dirt trail.
After a short walk along a trail in the forest you will reach a small building signed Gornerschlucht. This is the official entrance into the gorge. Here you will pay a small fee to enter.
You can also visit Gorner Gorge while hiking from Furi to Zermatt. From Furi, it takes 20-minutes to walk to the entrance of the gorge. The entrance is near the village of Blatten. Once in the gorge, it takes 15 to 20-minutes to walk through it, and you will exit near the Forest Fun Park.
18. Hike or Bike the Gourmet Trail
Findeln is a hamlet that is located just down the hill from Sunnegga. Several of the best restaurants in Zermatt are located here. On the list are Adler Hitta, Findlerhof, Enzian, and Chez Vrony, a Michelin-starred restaurant. You can choose one and have lunch or spend the afternoon hopping from one restaurant to the next.
Findeln | Best Things to Do in Zermatt
PRO TRAVEL TIP: Before you go, check the official websites for opening times. These restaurants are not open 7 days a week (Enzian was closed during our visit on a Monday) so I recommend checking their hours before you go. Also note the closing time of the Sunnegga funicular (in the summer, the last descent is 6:00 pm but double check this before you go).
Findeln is located 2 km (just over one mile) from Sunnegga. To get here, it is a downhill walk (follow trail signs for Findeln) but you can also get here by bike.
Discover Adler Hitta
If you're strolling towards Findeln, consider taking the scenic trail to the right that leads you to Adler Hitta. This charming restaurant is conveniently located just 1 km (0.6 mile) from Sunnegga, making it the closest dining spot.
Despite the majority of visitors opting to venture further down the hill to Findeln, Adler Hitta offers a serene dining experience with awe-inspiring views. On both occasions we visited, the restaurant was pleasantly uncrowded. Alongside the pleasant atmosphere, Adler Hitta also boasts a delightful soundtrack and serves delectable cuisine, ensuring a complete sensory indulgence.
For a memorable dining experience that combines breathtaking vistas, melodious tunes, and mouthwatering dishes, Adler Hitta is not to be missed.

Must-Try Restaurants in Zermatt: Chez Vrony, Enzian, and Findlerhof
Embark on a culinary adventure in Zermatt with three exceptional dining establishments: Chez Vrony, Enzian, and Findlerhof (Findlen Eggen). Just a short distance below Sunnegga, the trail conveniently splits, offering you the chance to savor Swiss gastronomy at its finest.
Allow yourself to be captivated by the breathtaking vistas of the iconic Matterhorn while indulging in the delectable cuisine at Chez Vrony, a renowned Michelin-starred restaurant. Known for its popularity, I highly recommend securing a reservation in advance to ensure a memorable dining experience.
Enzian, another gem along the route to Findeln, awaits gastronomes with its exquisite menu and cozy ambiance. Immerse yourself in the local flavors as you appreciate the picturesque alpine scenery.
Travel a little further on this gastronomic journey to Findlerhof (Findlen Eggen). With its charming setting and delightful culinary offerings, this restaurant is a perfect stop to replenish your energy before continuing your exploration of Zermatt.
The Prominent Chez Vrony
Venturing further downhill will lead you to two additional culinary treasures: the renowned restaurants Enzian and Findlerhof.
After your meal, you have the choice to ascend towards Sunnegga, descend into Zermatt, or bike your way back if you have rented bicycles.
Experienced from both perspectives: ascending towards Sunnegga and descending to Zermatt. Given its proximity to the Sunnegga station, I find it optimal to journey uphill from the Adler Hitta, and then make your way back to Zermatt with the help of the funicular. For the trio of eateries nestled in the settlement (Chez Vrony, Findlerhof and Enzian), the downhill path to Zermatt serves as a superior option, despite its intensity, as trekking uphill to Sunnegga proves to be a lengthier jaunt.
EXPERT TRAVELLER SUGGESTION: On reflection, I would consider renting an e-bike in Zermatt, catch the funicular to Sunnegga, and spend the flurry of activity leaping from one restaurant to another. Then, I would cycle my way back to Zermatt to return the rented bike. Additional details on bike rentals in Zermatt can be discovered here.

20. Eat Your Way through Zermatt
Zermatt may be a small town but it is packed with fantastic restaurants. These range from fine dining restaurants to outdoor cafes to mountain huts with a view.
One of the best things to do in Zermatt is to hike to small restaurant that is located on a hillside, mountaintop, or quaint hamlet, and dine on traditional Valais cuisine.
Here is a list of our favorite restaurants in Zermatt.
Say Cheese! This is one of our absolute favorite restaurants in Zermatt. Share a bottle of wine and dine on fondue and raclette. If trying fondue is on your to-do list in Switzerland, this is our favorite restaurant.
Restaurant Furri. Located just a short walk from the Furi cable car station, this lively, friendly restaurant serves traditional Swiss cuisine. During our visit, live music was playing, which really added to the experience. Also in Furi, Aroleid is a Michelin-starred restaurant that we would love to try on a future visit to Zermatt.
Findeln. Mentioned earlier, you can’t go wrong with lunch at one of these restaurants. One of them, Chez Vrony, is a Michelin-starred restaurant. Plus, the views of the Matterhorn from the outdoor dining terraces of these restaurants are a nice bonus.
Blatten. If you plan to walk from Furi to Zermatt or visit the Gorner Gorge, lunch at Blatten is a great addition to the experience. This small restaurant serves fantastic Swiss cuisine and is one of the highest-rated restaurants on Trip Advisor.
Hornlihütte. Hornlihütte is just about as close as you can get to the Matterhorn without actually strapping on gear and climbing to the summit. It’s a challenging hike to get here but the views are unbeatable. Hornlihütte serves snacks and lunch.
Osteria Bella Italia. Italian food at this small restaurant was a nice break from Swiss cuisine. Le Chalet da Giuseppe and Vieux-Valais de Nico are two more Italian restaurants we were hoping to try, but we could only eat so much food.
Schweizerhof Kitchen. Schweizerhof Kitchen has a different vibe than the other restaurants on this list. With its modern decor, outstanding cocktail list, and dishes from around the world, this is a great restaurant to put on your list if you want a break from Swiss cuisine or just want a good cocktail.
Edelweiss. This very small restaurant is perched on a rocky cliff high about Zermatt. The only way to get here is on a short but very steep hike. Once here, you have great views of Zermatt and Monte Rosa. Just be aware that you cannot see the Matterhorn from here.
If you're up for a breathtaking view of Zermatt, head to Edelweiss - a hidden gem nestled on a cliff. However, be prepared to take a hiking trail to reach this picturesque spot.
Spycher is a highly acclaimed restaurant in Zermatt that we personally recommend. One of the highlights here is the flambeed food, prepared right in front of you on a side table. It's an incredible sight to behold while enjoying the delectable cuisine and excellent wine.
For a diverse culinary experience, make sure to visit Old Zermatt. Situated next to the Kirchbrücke, it boasts a prime central location. This restaurant offers a wide range of cuisines, making it a perfect place for every taste. We have a special connection to this establishment, as we celebrated our accomplishment of completing the Walker's Haute Route here.

What We Did: On our first visit to Zermatt, we spent almost two full days in Zermatt. On day 1, we took train from Mürren, in the Bernese Oberland, to Zermatt, arriving late morning. After lunch in town, we visited Gornergrat and hiked to Riffelberg. On the way back to Zermatt, we visited the Hängebrücke. That evening, we ate dinner in Zermatt. On day 2, we visited Matterhorn Glacier Paradise in the morning and hiked the Five Lakes Trail in the afternoon. On the morning of day 3, we took the train to Lausanne.
On our second visit to Zermatt, we spent three and a half days in Zermatt. This gave us more time to ride the cable car to Rothorn and hike a few more trails.
Three-Day Zermatt Exploration Guide
Devoting a minimum of three days for uncovering Zermatt's splendors comes highly suggested, and adventure enthusiasts might find themselves longing to linger longer.
An illustration of an ideal three-day Zermatt adventure is as follows:
Day 1: Start the day with a visit to Gornergrat. Later, let the morning sun accompany you during a trek to Riffelsee and Riffelberg. In the later hours of the day, lose yourself in the beauty of the Gorner Gorge and delight in an exploration of Zermatt.
Day 2: Begin with an inspiring visit to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Afterwards, set your foot on the Matterhorn Glacier Trail or explore the trail to Hornlihütte. Conclude the day with a satisfying dinner in Zermatt's warm ambiance.
Day 3: Your day should start with an exploration of Sunnegga, Blauherd and Rothorn. After soaking in these views, embark on a hike to Stellisee and relish the thrill of mountain carting alongside a delightful journey on the Gourmet Trail. To perfect your day, follow the trail as suggested in our Comprehensive Guide to Sunnegga and Rothorn.
Zermatt's shredding trails and pulsating nightlife earned it a spot among the world's best ski resorts. Also, it is the highest and the most massive summer skiing area in Europe, boasting a whopping 21 kilometers of pistes.

LUXURY: Panorama Ski Lodge. This was our splendid abode during our inaugural Swiss visit - a truly breathtaking experience. Our accommodations included a sizeable two-bedroom suite complemented by a fully-equipped kitchen, an expansive living area, and unparalleled vistas of the iconic Matterhorn. Out of all the places we've stayed in across Switzerland, this lodge was unsurpassed, ranking highly amongst our European sojourns. Nestled on an elevated terrain, the Lodge offers unmatched panoramas, attributing its prime positioning. Accessing Zermatt requires a leisurely 15-minute descent on foot. Keep in mind, the return trip can be quite demanding due to the steep incline. On the other hand, there's always the option of enlisting a taxi for a comfortable trip back to the lodge, bypassing the strenuous climb.
Experiences from Zermatt | Staying at the Panorama Ski Lodge
LUXURIOUS: Comfort at Matterhorn Lodge Hotel & Appartements. In our second journey to scenic Zermatt, we experienced the warmth of Matterhorn Lodge Hotel & Appartements, and it became our favourite place, surpassing our previous stay at the Panorama Ski Lodge. Our accommodation was a 3-bedroom apartment, equipped with a comprehensive kitchen and a cozy living room. The balcony offered a breathtaking view of the iconic Matterhorn. Nestled in the heart of the town, the hotel's location facilitated quick access to almost everywhere in Zermatt. However, the cable car station for Matterhorn Glacier Paradise/Schwarzsee was a small exception. After a day of adventure in the crisp mountain air, we considered testing our luck at some Casino hotels in Switzerland at top-hotels-switzerland.com. Although Matterhorn Lodge provided the tranquility we sought, we couldn't resist the allure of the nearby vibrant casino scene. With everything so conveniently located, it was exhilarating to balance relaxation with a pinch of excitement.
